Marquette’s Surprise Season Just One Of Many
By T.J. Bryce | Posted Friday, March 15
The 2012-2013 college basketball regular season has come to a close, and Marquette finished in a three-way tie with Louisville and Georgetown. Just ponder that one for moment. These are the same Golden Eagles that were supposed to finish in the middle of the conference, and remember, the Big East is a 16-team conference. Instead, they finish first. Now I am going to let you in on a little secret. Their story this season, may not even be the best nationwide.
The Gonzaga Bulldogs have had a long hard climb to the top of the mountain, and this season, they finally made it, becoming the number one ranked team in America. Gonzaga, not Duke, not North Carolina, not Kentucky, not UCLA, not Kansas, not any other poster school, the Gonzaga bulldogs sit as the number one team in the country right now. That's quite a thought, isn't it? 15 years of hard work have finally paid off for the Bulldogs. But wait, there's more.
Badgers Team Comes To Life
Another great story has happened in our own State as the Wisconsin Badgers seemingly came to life out of nowhere back in January. As the New Year turned, the Badgers were tracking to miss the NIT. Yes, you read that right, they weren't just going to miss the NCAA tournament, and they were going to miss the NIT, basically the consolation prize for those who missed out on the dance. Sort of like all being a kid in high school who missed out on the big party so you and some of your friends are invited to your own little cheesy party being chaperoned by your parents. However, the Badgers have come to life and it is pretty much a safe bet that they have secured a spot in the dance. Now granted, they have been perhaps the luckiest team in college basketball the last two months, but a win is a win is a win regardless of anything else.
Then we have the mother of all improbable stories, the Miami Hurricanes. Yes Gonzaga, Marquette and Wisconsin are all great stories, but this one pretty much takes the cake. Not Duke, not North Carolina, not Wake Forest, not Maryland, not North Carolina State, Miami WON the ACC. Traditionally, the Hurricanes have been the worst team in the ACC. Think about it from this angle, that would be like the Detroit Lions winning the Super Bowl.
