Marquette Defeats Wisconsin at Kohl Center

By J.B. Marquette Basketball | Posted Monday, December 5

Marquette upset the top ranked Badgers at the Kohl Center this weekend. It was another heartbreaking loss for Wisconsin. The Badgers were hoping to rebound from their loss to top ranked North Carolina last weekend, and everything seemed to point to them doing so. They had won nearly thirty consecutive games in Madison, and hadn't lost to a non-conference opponent since 2008. Marquette was playing without Junior Cadougan, one of Marquette’s top scorers. Still, those setbacks didn’t stop Buzz Williams and his team from coming away with a 61-54 victory.

Despite a lackluster offensive performance (shooting just thirty-eight percent from the field, and connecting on two of eleven on threes,) the Golden Eagles defense shut down the Badgers offense. Wisconsin had twelve turnovers, on top of their poor shooting. Marquette also won the battle for rebounds, pulling down forty-four to the Badgers thirty-two. Wisconsin had only nine offensive rebounds for the night, the same amount they held Marquette to last year. The Golden Eagles won seventeen off the boards offensively.

With the win, Marquette remains undefeated and improves to 7-0. They have yet to open their conference. Williams told reporters after the game that he is looking forward to the conference opener with much anticipation. He regarded Wisconsin as the first real challenge of the season, and hopes that their confidence from this win continues into the New Year.
