Marquette Basketball Team Crushing It In The Big East
By T.J. Bryce | Posted Tuesday, January 29
As it stands right now Marquette is 15-4 overall with a 6-1 record in conference after their 63-50 victory over South Florida at home last night. This is a great story and it's always a good thing for college basketball when Marquette is competitive. Here's what makes it so awesome; A world class fortune teller couldn't have predicted this one.
Marquette was supposed to finish in the middle of the pack in the Big East and be a borderline tournament team. Not anymore. Not only could the Golden Eagles make the NCAA tournament comfortably, but they could make some serious noise as well if they continue to defend like they have. What makes this even more amazing was that especially with the way they started the season, especially after their embarrassing loss at U.W. Green Bay, who in the world thought that they would be out in front in the Big East?
So how have they done it? Well, they've churned out some close wins, including a pair of overtime thrillers, one at home against UCONN and the other on the road in Pittsburgh, which is one of the toughest places to play in America. The Golden Eagles have defended REALLY WELL during this stretch of play. The signature win during this stretch of play was the 49-48 thriller at home over Georgetown on Jan. 5. After the crushing overtime loss at Cincinnati on Jan. 19, the Golden Eagles bounced right back and with a solid win against Providence. Next Sunday they take a big trip to Louisville and we will find out just how good this Marquette team really is.
Some of this could also be attributed to the fact that the Big East, outside of Syracuse and Louisville, is sort of down this year. Perfect opportunity for a team not expected to do much to come up and shock the world. Looking at the remainder of the Golden Eagles schedule, I see no reason as to why they can't keep this up.
